“This
is a wonderful idea. This is an opportunity to have new talent,
new things. The theatre needs it and this is a great event.” PAUL NICHOLAS, Producer & Actor,
BBC News Sept.2006
The Showcase was the starting
point for Perfect Pitch Musicals Ltd. It was set up in 2006,
produced by Andy Barnes Productions in association with both
Ovation and MTM:UK. The showcase took place at “Upstairs
At The Gatehouse” over a two week period and the audiences
were able to view three shows a night – usually two shows
in very early stages of development that would present around
20 minutes of material followed by a slightly more established
show that would present between 45 minutes and an hour.
The production values of each show ranged from rehearsed readings to fully costumed
and choreographed shows accompanied by a full band. In the two years since its
inception, Perfect Pitch has showcased the work of 34 composers, writers or creators
of musical theatre. Only 2 of these writers have previously had their work published
or been commissioned to write a new piece. In addition, 159 performers, 22 directors,
and 19 musical directors have been able to show their skills and work to an estimated
audience of around 2,500 people.
FROM 2008 THE
ANNUAL SHOWCASE WILL TAKE ON A NEW FORMAT – SIMILAR TO THE
NAMT FESTIVAL FOR NEW MUSICALS IN NEW YORK.
The event will take place in London’s
West End optimising the opportunity for industry professionals
to see the new work. It will run for just one week and showcase
6 shows, each as a 45 minute concert style presentation. (Two
shows a night with each show having two performances). The
pieces will be presented by established performers and stripped
of any unneccessary production values leaving the audience with
a professional demonstration of the material only.
Well developed shows that have been submitted
to Perfect Pitch and are ready to be entered directly into
the Showcase will feature alongside those that have reached
the desired standard by being workshopped and developed through
the network. Musicals that create professional interest and
display commercial potential will be offered further development
opportunities after the Showcase.
